True story:

I was sent,sorry “attended” military school for 7 years, beginning at age 12. We would line up at the two pay phones to call home. One time I called and received the following message “The number you have dialed xxx-xxx-xxxx has been changed, to an unlisted number”!

I called the long distance operator and explained that my parents forgot to give me the number, but she would not connect me and was going to charge me to talk with the operator in my home town. I told here they REALLY wanted to talk to me, but the answer was still NO.

I placed a collect call to my Grandmother who gave the operator the number to my home.

To this day, the family position was “We sent you that number…”. yeah, imagine a guy sent away who somewhat regularly called asking for money, losing his only lifeline to an allowance… THAT is NOT gonna happen!
