While people worldwide hold their breath because the Mayans got tired of filling out a calender, we missed a disaster. These same people didn’t blink when a 120 foot asteroid passed between the earth and the moon. To put it into perspective, it was about 1/2 way between the earth and the moon.

An object of similar size flattened 800 square miles (2,000 square km) of forest when it exploded above Siberia’s Podkamennaya Tunguska River in 1908.
