A few decades ago, the court in state of Virginia (or is it a Commonwealth?) was faced with a problem. A man was brought before the judge because he stole Christmas gifts. The card was addressed to Jeff from Santa. When the police caught the criminal he said he was “DELIVERING” the gifts and he was Santa.

The judge grilled the criminal who kept saying he was Santa. The judge wanted to consider the man crazy, but so many other people in the state also believed in Santa that the judge could not prove the man was NOT santa. Thus he could not prove the man crazy.

Virginia state law now has a legal precedent that states that anyone who claims they are Santa, is not crazy.

This is the basis for the well-know phrase “Yes, Virginia, there IS a SANITY CLAUSE!”
