Verizon Wireless is rolling out their new service. Using their cell towers, the service looks like cell service that uses your home phone. The equipment is free with a 2 year contract, or you can pay for it.

While not obvious, this is VOIP without having to have any internet connection at home at all.

It remains to see if fax or home security systems can use it, however, unlimited calling for $20 is a good price for those using more expensive landline service.

With a backup power source, this might work during power outages.

They say you may be able to port your existing phone number over.

While they offer voicemail, it may cost to use that. You could use GoogleVoice or Ribbit or another service instead, or hook up a home answering machine.
